Welcome to Part 5 of our Black Business Series. Today we are spotlighting Ashley Damas, the creator of Sweets N Tingz. This bakery specializes in cupcakes in the Miami and FAU area. Damas is a Health Science major who is set to graduate in 2023.

Damas started her business in February 2020, “I started off baking just to make quick money for a family trip, I ended up falling in love with it and wanting to learn more,” said Damas. Right now her main item are cupcakes but she plans to add more desserts and cakes soon.

Since COVID-19 has reached it’s peak, business has been extremely slow. However, Damas remains vigilant, “I have faced challenges like being discouraged and feeling like I’m not being recognized. I know for sure that people enjoy my cupcakes but I want to branch out of just family and friends,” said Damas.
Sweets N Tingz’s target audience is mainly college students as many people buy cupcakes on campus.
“Running a black business is important because they are often overlooked. People seem to feel like just because your black your business may not be as good as the white man next door and that the prices are too expensive,” she said.

Her advice for people interested in starting a business is to never stop when you have discouraging moments, “Don’t pay attention to the next person! Stay focused on your self, your time will be here soon.”
