Black Owned Business Spotlight Series: J’Lavish Looks

In light of recent events there has been a greater emphasis on the support of Black Owned Businesses. Everyday, we hear about the injustice that occurs towards black people at our go-to companies. For example, Walmart is guilty of only locking up hair and beauty products that are tailored for black women, JPMorgan Chase has received numerous allegations of discrimination against black financial advisers and customers, and Starbucks and Publix have been accused of not allowing their employees to wear Black Lives Matter symbols on their clothes or facemasks. Furthermore, chains like Chick-fil-a and Estee Lauder have been “cancelled” by the black community because of their hefty donations to the re-election campaign for Donald Trump.

These recent allegations against these companies have led to a new movement: shop black owned businesses. More and more people are realizing the financial impact we have on the economy and are noticing that we have the power to do it ourselves and keep the money within the black community. For every item you may need at Walmart, Target, or Starbucks, there is a black owned equivalent.

The purpose of this series is to highlight black owned businesses in our FAU community. Each week we will feature a new business starting off with J’Lavish Looks.

J’Lavish Looks is a black owned business that sells affordable sunglasses and accessories. This company was started in 2020 by Jakeiria Davis, a sophomore majoring in health administration with a minor in criminal justice.

Founder and CEO Jakeiria Davis

“I have always loved to wear trendy jewelry and sunglasses, so I decided to start a business where I sell items I love to wear! I have always had the desire to start my own business,” said Davis.

Davis believes that it is important to run a black business because there is so much money in for African Americans to make, “It gives a sense of ownership, pride, and diversity within our society,” said Davis. She said that since recent events have occurred she has gotten more sales.

Everyone knows that starting a business comes with its own set of challenges. Davis’ biggest challenge has been expansion, “I use my social media platforms to promote my business but I feel as if more can be done to spread the word about J’Lavish Looks,” said Davis. She is currently working on ways to promote her stylish sunglasses and accessories outside of social media.

With the demand of black owned businesses increasing, there should be an increase in the amount of companies that we see in the coming months. Davis’ word of advice is to not give up, “There are plenty of days where I do not make sales but I still continue to promote my business daily. There will be people who won’t like your products but I would just advise new business owners to continue to promote and they will reach their goals! Being a business owner is not easy, but it is something that I am very proud of. Also, do not be afraid to take risks especially when it comes to investing into your business. It will take time but it will be worth it!,” said Davis.
